I am flying to Stockholm on Monday from Chicago on SAS, and was just wondering what the drinking age on the plane is. I am 18 and was just wondering in case I wanted to have a couple drinks.
I know its 21 in the states, but I have been told by many people it depends on the drinking age of the country where the airline is based.

21
The drinking age in Sweden is 18, but the age to buy/possess alcohol is 20. I checked the SAS web site, which makes no mention of drinking age on their flights, but does list that economy class has to buy drinks on international flights from the US. There is a mention of a “cocktail and snack” which might mean one free drink, but I’m not sure. If you have to purchase the drinks, I’m guessing the airline would follow the rule that you must be 20. If they serve them free, it is probably 18. I know SAS is a multi-national airline, but all the Scandinavian countries have slightly different rules for alcohol.
I’ve been served alcohol on international flights (and some US flights) since I was 15 or 16 though, because I looked older than I was and dressed nicely for the flight. This includes many SAS flights. You’ll find that if you dress up a bit with no obvious indication of how old you are, most FAs won’t question your age and serve you anyway.
